In the battle for pay equity, there’s some good news coming out of the European Union: A new law will mandate that companies take action to eliminate the discrepancy between what men and women earn for doing the same work.
In a recent blog post for The Josh Bersin Company, senior vice president of research Kathi Enderes calls the new law “groundbreaking” and highlights why this legislation could be a game changer. Here are some key components to the new law:
Employers are prohibited from asking candidates about their salary history Companies must be transparent about pay levels and the criteria for promotions and career progression If a pay gap exists, employers must consistently report what that gap is and, if it exceeds 5%, they must show how they’re working to reduce it with actionable steps
“We’ve been talking with clients and this is a big deal,” Kathi writes. “While the law is good news for employees (and, yes, the directive also covers transgender and nonbinary people), employers are worried about how they will comply. And this is for good reason: Our recent study showed that 95% of organizations struggle with pay equity practices.”
