The Must-Read Articles for Talent Professionals This Week

With the start of 2025 just around the corner, many talent professionals are likely tinkering with new ideas and approaches to their work. A new year, after all, leads many to reconsider how they’ve tackled things in the past and what can be done differently in the future.

But how do talent pros make those changes beyond gut feelings? Well, reliable data is a good place to start and a new Pew Research Center report provides plenty of valuable insights that can help inform both recruiters and L&D professionals. Consider the following:

  • Half of the U.S. workers surveyed think of their current job as a career, while the other half consider their role to either be a stepping stone to a true career or just something that gets them by and pays the bills.
  • In 2022, 37% of U.S. workers believed it would be difficult to find the kind of job they’d really want. Fast forward to today and that number has risen to a whopping 52%.
  • Of the workers surveyed who felt they needed more training to be better at their jobs, 28% say learning on the job would be the best way for them to get it.

What does this all mean for talent professionals? For recruiters, it could help inform their outreach efforts to meet candidates where they are. Is your open req potentially a stepping stone to another position? And if a candidate is just looking for a role that helps them “get by,” what benefits does your business offer that would help them get by a bit more easily?

For L&D pros, is it worth reconsidering what elements make up your training programs? Perhaps, for example, employees would prefer more job shadowing and mentorship opportunities, as opposed to classroom training with a facilitator.
