The 10 Must-Read Articles for Talent Professionals This Week

Eight hours and 30 minutes.

That’s more than a day’s work for many people, yet according to ADP Research Institute’s People at Work 2023 report, that’s also the amount of “free work” that Gen Zers are adding to their workweek by starting early, burning the midnight oil, and pushing through breaks and lunches.

The report also highlights that although Gen Z employees are not alone in working these additional unpaid hours (45-to-54-year-olds, for instance, tacked on nearly 7½  hours of “free” overtime to their week), they are well ahead of the pack compared to older age brackets.

Many Gen Zers realize that putting in these extra hours may be unsustainable and could lead to burnout but they feel they have something to prove. “Everyone thinks we’re lazy,” one Gen Zer told BBC Worklife, “and that we just want to work from home, so it’s also going above and beyond to challenge that.”

So what does this mean for talent professionals? First and foremost, the report’s findings challenge stereotypes that many may hold about the youngest generation to join the workforce. For those recruiters who work at companies that maintain a healthy work-life balance, they may want to lead with this information to attract Gen Zers to open positions. And learning and development pros may want to partner even more closely with managers to ensure training and upskilling opportunities aren’t overwhelming already busy weeks.
