The Must-Read Articles for Talent Professionals This Week
In a recent article, the Harvard Business Review doesn’t mince words on the souring relationship between employers and employees: “People stay in roles out of necessity rather than loyalty — an unsustainable arrangement that results in predictably low engagement.”
And just how low is engagement? HBR notes that a recent Gallup report found that only 23% of U.S. employees are engaged at work, a meager 34% say they are thriving at their job, and over half of all respondents are looking for a new gig in some shape or form.
As a result of these poor numbers, HBR believes it’s time to drastically overhaul how companies think about work. Businesses may actually want to turn to product designers for ideas of how to improve employee engagement, essentially viewing work as a product and employees as customers. “We believe,” HBR writes, “that companies can benefit from a radical reframing of work as something that employees actively choose to ‘buy’ with their labor — and that must be designed to help them make that choice every day.”
To learn more about this innovative approach and how it could get to the heart of what workers really want from their jobs, be sure to check out HBR’s article at the top of our list below of must-read articles for talent professionals. And further down our list, you can also find out why being too pleasant may be causing problems in the workplace; why HR is in for a “wild ride” come 2025; and what an ethicist thinks about lying to an AI chatbot during the hiring process.
