The Must-Read Articles for Talent Professionals This Week
“Let’s face it,” writes Harvard Business Review in a recent article. “Who hasn’t felt bored at work at some point? Maybe you’re experiencing it right now, scrolling through HBR.org [Ed. note: Or the LinkedIn Talent blog for that matter!] to take a break.”
The trouble, however, occurs when situational boredom (tuning out at the end of an unproductive meeting or hopping onto your phone to play some Wordle or a LinkedIn game) turns into existential boredom.
“While workplace boredom is common,” HBR continues, “it becomes truly problematic when it’s rooted not in repetitive tasks or tedious meetings, but in a deeper sense of purposelessness — when employees find themselves asking, What am I even doing here?”
Fortunately, there are several steps managers can take to address this kind of disengagement and prevent an uptick in turnover and so-called “quiet quitting.” First up, perhaps surprisingly, is to simply accept it. “The employees who were best able to overcome existential boredom did so by first accepting it,” HBR writes. “Conversely, those who had the hardest time overcoming existential boredom were those that refused to acknowledge it.”
To learn more about tackling — and sometimes embracing — boredom at work, be sure to check out HBR’s piece at the top of our list below of must-read articles for talent professionals. And further down our list, you can find out what it takes to engage passive talent in the current labor market; how LinkedIn video can help you attract candidates; and why teaching and developing social capital could be key to workers rolling up their sleeves and getting things done.
